Addiction:A Fatal Enemy
The other day I was sitting in a waiting room while my grandmother received eye surgery
, and I did the classic yawn and reach for the magazine. I stumbled across a few pictures, until I found something that really peaked my interest. There was an article about a husband and wife who were having marital problems. The first section was from the wife's point of view, and the next was from her husband's. This couple had been having marital problems due to the husband's addiction to porn. But it wasn't exactly your classic case. And that's where things got interesting.
The way the wife described it, she had noticed odd behaviors in her husband. He spent way too much time downstairs. At one point she chalked it up to a mid-life crisis. She noticed he had been spending far too much time on his computer, and when she asked about it, he claimed to be selling a lot of things on ebay. But one day, she found a picture of a girl that was very explicit on his computer. When the truth came out, he wasn't looking at ebay at all. He was surfing adult websites, including ads that make you pay. He signed up for a wesbite in which you are able to pay for phone sex. He admitted to spending 25,000 dollars on this addiction in the past year.
Understandingly, many people visit adult websites. It's human nature. But where does curiosity become addiction? Spending thousands of dollars on these sites seems a little extreme. It's not a problem of lust, either. It's proven that people like this man have deep mental issues. For instance, as a child, his dad pushed him around and made him feel worthless. His therapist suggested that perhaps he felt as if he would never be able to please anyone, including his wife. So he turned to a place where he wouldnt have to please anyone but himself. Addictions like these are life-changing. The sad truth? They're common. They exist everywhere you go. The best remedy is to seek help immediately, and hope the damage already done isn't permanent. Hope that the people who love you will understand, and forgive.
