Losing mobility can be a scary experience. It is perfectly normal for a person to experience feelings ranging from sadness and embarrassment, to anger and even resentment. It may feel like nobody can understand what you are going through. How hard everything is. Don't be afraid to reach out to people. Some people do not want to show weakness, but it is only through openness that we can truly touch each others lives.
There will be times in your life when the outlook you choose to have can define your future. This is one of them. Embrace life. Be willing to do what is necessary to find your "new normal." It may not be the same as before, but it can be what you choose to make it. You have the chance to shape your future.
One of the most important things to realize is that you are not alone. There are millions of people around the world who struggle with mobility problems every day. There are resources and support groups out there where you can learn how to cope with your new life. One of the worst mistakes you can make is to turn inward and let despair take hold. Most likely you have suffered some sort of set back in your life before. It's time to keep moving forward and not shut everybody out from your life.
For many people some things will have to be done in a new way entirely. Other tasks will only require a little assistance to get the job accomplished. The way the world works in most places there is not much accommodation for those without two working arms and legs. It is hard for many people to understand the frustration that comes with losing the ability to do things for yourself. Part of the process of learning new skills is to find out what you would like help with- what would make living with your new limitations more manageable.
There are many different things out there that can help you regain control. From walkers chairs and scooters to stair lifts, chair lifts and hand controlled cars. There are so many ways to get moving again. Embrace them. Embrace each day and you will find joy, even when one day seems harder than the others. Embrace each person you come in contact with, and you will build relationships that will get you through the darkest day.
