Are Emergency Led Lights Costly

After LED lights came into use most emergency vehicles are using it as warning lights

, though halogen lights are still in use because it is comparatively cheaper. Emergency LED lights gained instant popularity because they are high efficiency performers and great energy savers. If everybody is not using emergency LED lights, it is mainly because they find that its cost is on the high side.

It is true that emergency LED lights are costlier than incandescent lights and fluorescent lights. But its cost equation can be effectively balanced if it is used the right way. One big advantage of LED lights over other lights is its long life. Since its bulbs will easily last more than 50,000 hours, the question of replacement does not arise at all. But to get the advantage of this feature, the user should make sure that the emergency LED light is used continuously.

A bulb that can burn for more than 50,000 hours will last decades, even if it is used daily. The emergency vehicle on which the light is installed is unlikely to last that long. So to get full advantage from the feature, the emergency LED light should be removed from one vehicle and fitted on the new one, when the first one is getting sold or is making its way to the junk yard. Those in charge have to take care of it to make the emergency LED light cost effective.

Another way to control its cost is to ensure its energy efficiency by proper installation and maintenance. So far as the emergency LED light circuit is designed perfectly, the light will be quite energy efficient because about 80% of the electricity will get converted into light with only the remainder producing heat. So it will not tax the electrical circuit of the vehicle. Even if the light is mounted inside, vehicle interior will also be cool so that the air conditioning system will also not be overtaxed.

Leveraging the warranty provisions of emergency LED lights can also help in cost control. Some warranties will have upgradation provisions with which the users will be able to get a newer model cheap and also get a fresh warranty with it. This will also make an emergency LED light more economical.

Besides all these, attempts are continuously being made to make the production of LED lights cheaper. Some companies are trying to produce sapphire substrate that is more than 8" in diameter and this is likely to bring down production costs of LED lights since the 3" substrate that is used nowadays is one of the reasons for the high cost of emergency LED lights. Besides, thinning the substrate is also being experimented with, which could also bring down the costs.

Other experiments going on in the field are on the viability of using silicon wafers or gallium nitride in the place of sapphire. New cooling technologies are also being experimented with to replace the heat sinks made of heavy metal with lighter material. If all these become successful, it will bring down the cost of LED production, and thereby that of emergency LED lights.
