What triggers a change to cause us to begin listening to our conscience? Sometimes is comes as a shock of reality. Sometimes is comes when we lose our family over the addiction. Sometimes it comes as a health attack by the addiction. Sometimes it a traumatic wake up experience. For some it is a spiritual awakening. Whichever it is, many ex-addicts will acknowledge that their big change came when they were able to start listening to their conscience.
Deep inside of us we know that our addiction is destroying our life. We realize that it will affect our mind, that it can affect our physical body functions throughout life, and that it will affect our total outlook on life. We realize that our addiction will destroy the relationship with our friends and family. And all the while our conscience is telling us all of this, our desires continue to crave for another high.
To overcome an addiction we have to gain the confidence and fortitude necessary to fight against those desires and listen to our conscience when it speaks to us. We have to listen to our conscience when it says we need help to get clean, that we need support to make it through. Our conscience knows us more than we know ourselves.
Whatever shocks us into the realization that we need to listen to conscience when the inner conflict begins, is the turning point in our beating our addiction.
