Lets face it, self employment requires a bit of courage

, a great deal of self dicapline, and a lot of hard work. Unless you are up to the task, you might want to reconsider. If you decide to go forward with this idea though, you will need to have the resources set aside for you to keep going until your new venture starts generating revenue.

I can speak about this from experience since I started a business over 25 years ago manufacturing electrical equipment. I was very successful and not at all intimidated in this venture since I had been managing the same kind of business for someone else for the previous 20 years, so there was no doubt in my mind that I would not be successful.

Shortly after I started I had quite a few employees and several large contracts and things were moving right along, however, cash flow is always a concern. One of the many contracts we were working on was for over a million dollars, it was with one of the five largest electrical companies in the U.S., but this company who we will leave nameless was famous for waiting 120 days after the product is delivered to pay the bill.

This is just one instance of the obstacles you may encounter in obtaining large contracts. One way to offset this is try to negociate progress payments written into the larger contracts. This will help to keep you out of cash flow difficulties. Needless to say, I made a ton of money for the 6 years I owned that business, and every since I sold it, I have wanted to have my own business again. I retired a few months ago though,and started looking on the internet for something to do to fill my idle time.
