Before You Try Botox. Read This

I am aware that Botox is a very popular way to hide lines and wrinkles, and that millions of people around the world wouldn't even consider using anything else, so my expectation ofthis group reading my article, is slim.

But for those of you who are considering Botox for the first time this is for you.

There are dangers with this form of treatment, so you need to do your home-work to make absolutely sure whatyou are doing, is right for you.

Always talk to your doctor first, especially if you are on any medication.

Botox can be dangerous if it is not administered by a trained competent person.

Side-effects can differ from person to person, and you won't be aware how it will affect you until it is too late.

It can lead people into debt, because it is expensive, andtreatments willneed to be carried out regularly to maintain the effect.

It can cause dependency, because no-one wants to go back to how theylooked before they started the treatment.

Avoid Botox parties, and cheap back street operators.

Now, Botox hasn't done anything to me, because I won't let it. But from some of the letters I have read, and from some e-mails that I have received, it has certainly done some nasty and upsetting things to others.

I would just like to share a couple of these people's stories with you, starting with Grace, which is not her real name.

Graces' Story

Grace has been having Botox on and off for some years, mainly for lines on her forehead, and between the eyebrows. She had never experienced any side effects after a treatment before - until her last visit.

It wasn't until five days after the treatment, she began to feel ill. Grace explained that her symptoms were flu like - chills, fever, high temperature, aching joints, loss of appetite, being sensitive to light and total weakness, plus having severe nausea.

You could argue that Grace could have the flu, she did present with some flu like symptoms, but after contacting the manufacturer of the Botox she was given, they told her that she was experiencing some, in-fact they said she had many of the side effects that can occur after a Botox treatment. Grace said It was awful. It was more like having the flu, and food poisoning at the same time".

Grace went on to say, "I will never have Botox again, and I would discourage everyone not to go there. I lost money because I had to have time off work, and I was unable to take care of my family, and it took two weeks before I began to feel normal. I would much rather keep my wrinkles

Sally's Story

Next is Sally's story, (again not her real name). And she too has had a particularly bad experience after her first introduction to Botox. Only for Sally her symptoms started only hours after her treatment.

Sally had gone to a Botox party at her friend's home. "The woman who was there to carry out the injections called herself a nurse, only because she was wearing a white coat", said Sally.

She told Sally she could lose the lines on her forehead, and around her eyes, using only a small amount of Botox, which would help to keep down the cost.

At first Sally was reluctant, but, encouraged to have a go by all the women there, plus a few glasses of wine, Sally said she would, and agreed a price of $465 US. Click here

She asked the nurse if there would be any side effects, and the nurse told Sally that she could experience some flu like symptoms, and maybe a headache, but she was not to worry, because all the symptoms she had mentioned where classed as normal' anyway.

Unlike Grace, Sally's symptoms started to occur shortly after her treatment. She spoke of her heart racing, pain and tingling along the side of her face, muscle weakness, and extreme anxiety. Now these symptoms don't sound flu like to me, and nor did they to Sally.

"I really began to worry" said Sally. I thought I had Botulism, I felt so ill.

Straight after her injection her face began to swell with bumps appearing, the area turned red and was painful if touched. Sally began to feel nauseous, weak, and a little time later found she was unable to eat.

And the nightmare just went on. Both her eyebrows began to droop, her face was numb, and even after six days she was still feeling nauseous and unable to eat, causing her to lose nearly 4lbs. in weight.

Sally experienced some of the worst side effects that can happen after a treatment, pounding racing heart, anxiety, plus the taste of metal at the back of her throat, "just as though the Botox was in her sinuses", she said.

Although Sally experienced some the worst side effects Botox can throw at you, she also experienced one of the most serious side effects of all, difficulty in swallowing. The other very serious side effect is difficulty breathing.

People have been known to die after spending time on life support, when these symptoms occur. Sally was very fortunate to survive her dalliance with Botox, and of course she blames herself when she looks back over the weeks since her injection.

I shouldn't have let myself be talked into having it done she keeps saying - I can honestly say I have been through the worst experience of my life. Even now weeks later, she still has to take a range of medications.

"And for what" she said. "It cost me money I couldn't really afford, and I have nothing to show for it but droopy eyebrows, but the real irony is the wrinkles are still there".

Maybe these two ladies were just unlucky, but I can tell you there are many, many, more stories like those of Sally and Grace. But what is absolutely clear, is that these two women's bodies re-acted so badly to the toxin, it could have ended in tragedy.

Wouldn't it be good practice for any clinic to test first, to see if a person may have a reaction?

A friend of mine was recently in the UK visiting family. She called into a hair salon because she wanted to have a colour treatment before she returned home.

The salon explained that they would have to carry out a test on her hair, to check if she would have a re-action to the chemicals in the colour, which they could do there and then. My friend would then return to the shop after three days, and if all was well, she could then make an appointment to have what she wanted. .

Although my friend said, "She had had a hair colour applied regularly for as long as she could remember, and she promised not to sue the salon if anything went wrong", they stood their ground, and refused to carry out the procedure without a test.

And a similar thing happened to her husband when he wanted to buy more contact lenses. A test would need to be carried out, although he was wearing contact lenses at the time, and again had used them for years, the optician refused to sell him any lenses without him first agreeing to a test, and then he had to wait for two days to see if he had any kind of reaction.

They both thought this kind of testing to be over-the-top, especially when it's for two everyday occurrences. But is it? Chemicals are being used in both cases, and especially for the eyes. Yes, at the time my friends found the whole thing to be silly, inconvenient and a waste of their time.

I will tell you what is silly - no not silly, silly is a silly word when applied in this context. What I really mean is negligent.
