Beginner's Guide To Wakeboard Sizes

In order to ride your wakeboard successful and have full control over it

, you need to choose a board with the right size for you. But how do you find a board that fits your needs?

Wakeboards are designed for various weight ranges: For example a 119cm board is suitable for anyone up to 95 lbs, while a 142cm board is ideal for those who weigh 165 lbs and up. Experienced wakeboarders and pros can up- and downsize their wakeboards to achieve specific purposes and to match a cerain style, but since you may be more of a beginner, you should consider the size charts as your main help in finding the right board. Therefore, you should consult the chart at your local wakeboard store and if you are unsure, you can also ask a sales person to provide you with some individual advice.

Later on, when you become more experienced, your riding style will emerge and you may find that the standard wakeboard for your size does not fit your style and what you want to do and achieve with it. For example, you may have the feeling that you need to challenge yourself more, to attempt more extreme stunts and to see where your limit is at. When that happens, you may need a new wakeboard that is a level or more above or below of your originally required level.

If you come to the point described above and do not consider changing your board, your riding experience may become a very bad and frustating one... so do not let that happen and reinvent yourself. If your board is to short for your size you may not float as good as you would like to. You could also sink further into the water and your board might feel unstable to you. On the other hand, experienced wakeboarders may choose a shorter board because it is much easier to do flips, spins and tricks and because of the fact that they are able to handle the harder landing they get while using a shorter board.

There are also some larger sized wakeboards on the market. Regulary they may feel just too heavy for you at first and you may think that they will be too difficult to manage. It is in fact harder to do flips and other tricks becauseof their heaviness, but on the plus side, a longer board can be great for beginners since it offers more control as you lean tricks. The larger surface area means that it chan sit on top of the water and glide thriugh it just fine. Your landings will be much less painful too.

In conclusion, the choosing of the right wakeboard is entirely up to the rider. There are different factors (like the riders experience, his weight, his style and what he wants to do with it) which in combination will make it impossible to give an advice on THE perfect board for everyone. But there are numerous size charts avaible to help you determine the correct wakeboard length for your particular weight range.
