Best Ways You Can Train Your Dog Well in The House
You have got a dog for your child on his birthday; a cute little dachshund. Your child loves it and so does the entire family. You love the way it plays around the house, you adore the way it sleeps, you laugh when you see it trying out some funny tricks to impress you, in other words you are simply in love with your dog. But when it goes and 'does its business' on your new carpet, or when the whole house stinks of its waste products, would you feel any love towards your dog? Sadly no! You would only be irritated since you just got the carpet and it's already spoiled, or you just cleaned the house and it already stinks like a dirty, sweaty sock. But, one cannot blame the dog. You, as a dog owner, have to house train your dog properly so that it creates no situation like this. Dog training is a daunting task. Here are some steps on how to house train your dog.
House Training a Dog
The best time to start learning how to house train a dog, is when they are small puppies, around 8 or 9 weeks old. While training them, you have to be firm with them, but not cruel. There are several ways to learn how to house train your dog. Following these steps will make this so-called difficult task much easier. You just need some patience and lots of love for your dog.
Start Indoors
The first few weeks, during puppy potty training, put out papers for your puppy around the house. You can also use pretreated pads, which has chemicals in it that attracts dogs. Keep a good watch on them. When you see them sniffing around corners, just pick them up and put them on the pad or the newspaper and teach them how to use it whenever they want to potty. Do not forget to reward them with dog treats after they have correctly used their bathroom. But this has to be done only during the first few weeks. Make sure that it does not get into a habit of doing toilet indoors.
Take Them Outside
The best way to house train a dog is to slowly take them outside. It's a common dog behavior trait to excrete as soon as they have eaten their meals. Dogs, unlike humans cannot express when they have to go out. So, take them out frequently, especially after every meal. Keep them on leash, but let them roam freely. Let them smell around for a while. They need some time to get used to the environment, before they start excreting. Finally, when they do find a spot to excrete, pat them and tell them some encouraging words that will show them that what they are doing is a good thing and that it's making their master happy (dogs will go to any extent to make their masters happy). Also, while they are excreting, keep saying words like, "do potty" or "do your business" etc, so that the dog can associate the phrase with the particular time and location. Do not forget the treats, which you should give them as soon as they have done their business.
Indoor Accidents
Sometimes, your dog, may 'accidentally' excrete indoors. It would be a mistake to scold them or rub their nose against the spot of accident. That would be plain cruel and I have seen some dog owners do this. By this, the dog not only learns nothing, but they become afraid of their master. When you see that your dog has had an accident indoors, just take them to that spot, and scold the potty but not the dog. That way the dog will learn that they are not supposed to do 'that' indoors. Make sure that you clean the area well and that there is no smell. The scent of previous 'accidents' often encourages a dog to excrete in the same place again.
Feed Them Well
Another step while trying to learn how to house train your dogs is to make sure that your dog does not eat or drink too much. If it has a full stomach, then that would mean that you will have to be extra careful about its toilet duties. Of course, you cannot eliminate the number of times it drinks water, so that it urinates less.
During the entire process that you're trying to learn how to house train your dog, you need two main things; patience and love. Also, when your dog does some 'accident' indoors, and realizes that what it has done, is not making you happy, it will look at you with those sweet innocent eyes and try to melt your heart (and it will be successful in doing so), but you have to be firm. By firm I do not mean strict; do not be cruel to them. With proper dog care, and by following these housebreaking tips, you will be able to house train your dog well.
