Using the right chimney insulation material, chimney dampers, and chimney caps can help you to create chimneys that function properly and provide years of safe, effective service. Chimney Insulation Material

There are several different types of chimney insulation material available. Each is designed to work with a specific type of chimney. TherMix is a UL listed chimney insulation material that is mixed with a little bit of water and poured into the space between the inside of the masonry chimney and the stainless steel chimney liner. A patented mixture specifically designed to maintain a consistent temperature and prevent heat transfer; it sets up semi-hard and adds to the chimney's structural integrity.

Foil faced ceramic chimney insulation is also UL Listed and is designed to be paired with Ventinox chimney liners. Constructed of strong, insulating ceramic fibers and designed to withstand high temperatures, it is simply applied to the liner with adhesive, then covered with mesh and clamped to the chimney liner prior to the liner being installed in the chimney. Mesh, clamps, and adhesive are sold separately.

Saf-T Wrap chimney insulation is UL Listed and is designed to be paired with the Heat-Fab Saf-T Liner. Consisting of an aluminum outer shell with a ceramic blanket inside, it simply wraps around the liner. The seam snap-locks together like a snap-lock pipe.

Unfaced ceramic blanket insulation is used for stuffing gaps around fireboxes, chimney dampers, the smoke chamber, and masonry thimbles. While this type of chimney insulation doesn't carry any listings, it is often used to replace ceramic blankets on woodstove baffles.

Chimney Dampers

Not only do chimney dampers help to ensure fires burn properly, they save on home heating and air conditioning costs by sealing chimneys when not in use, controlling air loss much in the same way a storm door does.

There are several different sizes and configurations available, with traditional models doing an adequate job, but with the newest chimney dampers, which are called chimney top dampers, providing the best seal possible. These chimney dampers attach to the flue liner with silicone adhesive and are controlled via a chain that drops down the chimney, which is threaded through a bracket mounted on the fireplace wall. These are only suitable for use with open burning masonry fireplace chimneys and are not designed for use with woodstoves or gas burning stoves. But, like two products in one, these chimney dampers act as chimney caps when closed, keeping birds and animals out.
