When we talk about whole grain food, there are a host of them available at the supermarkets and your nearby grocery stores. The world of grain and whole grain products contain a great many healthy snacks, including whole grain breads (wheat bread and rye bread are great choices), whole wheat bagels, wholesome tortilla shells, pita bread and whole grain cereals. Whole grain food comes under complex carbohydrates and non wholegrain food such as white bread/ white rice are considered simple carbohydrates. Before we delve further into the difference between both types of carbohydrates, you need to understand what causes your hunger pangs. The feeling of hunger is mostly related with the intense desire or need for food and it can be caused by psychological factors or physiological factors or both. Most importantly, you need to know that you will feel hungry when your blood sugar level dips. When this happens, you will feel the need to eat. The last thing we want is mindless eating when you are not hungry and this will derail your efforts to keep off extra calories and fats.
Now back to the topic on simple and complex carbohydrates. You need to understand the link between your sugar level and type of carbohydrates you eat.As not all carbohydrate foods are created equal, in fact they behave quite differently in our bodies. The glycemic index or GI describes this difference by ranking carbohydrates according to their effect on our bloodsugar levels.
Foods with a high GI are those which are rapidly digested and absorbed and result in marked fluctuations in blood sugar levels. High GI food include those food like white bread, white rice sugar, honey, pineapple, raisins, ripe bananas, baked/mashed potato, parsnips, carrots,cornflakes, muffins, dates.
Low-GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion and absorption, produce gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels, and have proven benefits for health. Most of the whole grain food come under low GI and low GI diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2). They have benefits for weight control because they help control appetite and delay hunger. Low GI diets also reduce insulin levels and insulin resistance.
If you choose to consume food with low GI carbs it helps keep the sugar level constant andthey produce only small fluctuations in our bloodsugar and insulin levels - This isthe secretand key to sustainable weight loss as you will not experience sudden spike in your blood sugar level and subsequent dip that send you craving and scurrying for food.
As you can see now, there are many benefits to start switching to eating whole grain food. If you are not used to eating whole grains, start small as usual and make the switch gradually. The key here is to be able to sustain the diet long-term and really see results that will help you change your eating habits and lose fats in the long run!
