Camping and Picnic Cooler Buying Guide
When you are ready to buy a cooler, either for camping or to take along on a picnic, it might seem like a simple decistion. After all you just want to buy the biggest cooler you can get for the least amount of money right? Big box stores are full of cheap coolers and they are all just as good as the others aren't they?
The answer is "no". While a cooler is a pretty simple thing, you want to buy one that is going to last you a long time and does exactly what a cooler is supposed to do : keep things cool. A cheap cooler can lead to a ruined camping trip so before you buy consider the features and advantages of the better quality models.
First and foremost, a cooler should keep things inside of it cool. There are many coolers for camping that now have the ability to keep ice and drinks cold for up to a full five or six whole days. A cheap cooler can barely keep drinks cold for a full twenty four hours, let alone almost a week. If a cooler is designed to keep cold for 5 days, then think how effective it is going to be when you only need it for 2 or 3 days, or maybe even just a long day at a family reunion.
The ability to keep things cold goes beyond just making sure your cooler provides you with cold, refreshing drinks. It is also important in keeping your food cold so that it will be safe and fresh when it is time to eat. You want your camping trip to be fun and relaxing, you don't want it to be ruined by luke warm lunch meats or even worse, food poisoning. An ice packed cooler can easily be as cold, if not colder, than your home refrigerator which means that your food will be tasty and bacteria free for longer.
Durability is another factor to consider when you purchase a cooler. Your cooler will usually spend most of its day sitting in the hot sun, getting rained on, or bouncing around in the back of your car or truck. A cheap cooler that is poorly constructed will not be able to take much abuse, particularly from the sun which can do more damage to things than many people realize.
Finally any good cooler will have a good liner that is easy to clean and resistant to smells. If the cooler also has material inside of it to prevent the growth of mold or mildew that is even better. A good cooler is easy to clean and easy to take care of.
If you take care of your cooler, and the cooler is well designed from the start it can last you almost a life time. Don't waste money on cheap coolers that will crack and fade under the sun or absorb odors faster than a sponge. The price difference between a generic cooler and a quality brand cooler is very small, and with the quality cooler you will not have to worry about warm drinks or spoiled food.
