Cancer Treatment: A New Hope Of Prevention And Cure

But despite it being a non-communicable disease, cancer has been spreading across all across the globe relentlessly, like the wave of plague of the Dark Ages. With aggressive therapy and more insight into the molecular mechanisms of the disease, what was a certain death knell for a patient in the past has now become a brighter outlook thanks to the recent development in the cancer treatment methods employed.

Like how all treatments come with a risk of side effects because of the drugs used, cancer chemotherapy has its own deleterious effects on the body in damaging not only the tumour cells but also the body's normal cells, and is often a painful experience to undergo these treatments. Often, the misery doesn't end there, but the after effects of the chemotherapy like immune suppression can leave the person to be more susceptible to trivial infections that can cause life threatening complications, especially so the viral infections. Hence, present day cancer treatments though highly refined is still a risky process.

But there is hope for cancer patients in the present days, as intensive research into the many vital aspects of cancer biology and the cornerstones of the establishment of cancer cells continue, newer and often unknown cellular and subcellular mechanisms which are different in cancer cells are unearthed, making them potential targets for cancer treatment. But as one deviates from the regular courses of cytotoxic chemotherapy and radiation therapy, the field of newer, more specific and potentially safer drugs continue to open up, when previously unheard of or relatively innocuous drugs which are used as an alternative to regular cancer treatment and show relative selectivity for cancer cells as compared to normal cells have brightened the horizon of oncology for both clinicians and patients alike.

Given the potential and the promise that they hold, one needs to remember that a majority of these treatments are still at the theoretical or the animal experiment stage, and therefore they may take a relatively large span of time before they can be perfected and titrated to the human body. Yet, the outlook remains generally optimistic and promising, as all the newest cancer treatments are based on relatively concrete researched data on significant populations.

Hence the future of oncology is beginning to look brighter with each passing day, as the clarity on the understanding of how cancer cells work becomes more apparent and the cancer treatments that target these mechanisms also improve.
