Another product which fashioned castors was the baby cage' which was used similarly to that of a modern day playpen with castors making it easy to transport from room to room.

A lucrative business established in London by the end of the 1600's, castors were mass produced from hardwood and mounted to a horizontal axis. Leather was the next experimental choice and although popular on wooden floors they tended to buckle from the rusty instruments holding them together. Brass in 1730 was the next innovative choice.

In the modern day, castors are available in an array of materials such as nylon, rubber, aluminium, cast iron, pneumatic tyred, stainless steel and plastic. There are many more designs available which depend on the furniture to which the castor is to be attached. The larger the wheel diameter the less resistance the castor will require which is dependent upon movement.

Each day thousands of people across the UK trudge to the supermarket to do the weekly food shop. Without the aid of a trolley this would prove difficult unless trained in the art of carrying boxes on the head. A trolley would not be operative should it omit castors! Such a simple invention proving crucial for mundane tasks.

In the industrial world castors are utilized in the medical professions for the transportation of patients in beds, councils for refuse collections such as wheely' bins, and even on builders yards when securing scaffolding making them again a paramount addition to well thought out equipment.

If purchasing castors to add to an existing piece of furniture then it becomes imperative to obtain the correct fixing kit as this will hold the appropriate sized washers, nuts and bolts to secure in place before any commencement of movement. If the kit is not correct then the adjoining castor is likely to come loose possibly causing damage or even injury.

An item which has travelled through time and become prominent has embedded itself into everyone's lives without realisation yet is something which without we could have very easily been worse off.
