Characteristics of an Industrial Monitor

Industrial monitors differ from consumer-grade/retail monitors in many ways: they use industrial-grade components manufactured for long life with the ability to operate under continuous 24/7/365 usage; industrial monitors can be customized for commercial applications where they may be subjected to a variety of different users (such as a retail kiosk, dirty industrial plants, etc.). Retail/consumer-grade monitors are intended for desktop operation in a clean office or at home commercial use will void a warranty. They also have very narrow viewing angles.

Selecting an Industrial Monitor Selecting the right industrial monitor starts with considering the viewing audience, the type of information that will be displayed, and the environmental conditions under which the monitor will operate.

Viewing Audience Will one person be viewing the content or will a number of people need to see it at the same time? This question helps determine both screen size and viewing angle. If the audience is the general public, you may need to consider vandal proof glass.

Interface It's important to determine the kind of user interface that will be needed for the monitor. If space is at a premium, a touch screen LCD monitor is useful in replacing a mouse and keyboard as inputs. Touch screens consist of a touch sensor, controller circuitry, and software that interprets screen touches into commands - similar to clicking an icon on your screen with a mouse. There are four main types of touch screen monitors:

Resistive: This system is comprised of a glass panel with a conductive and resistive metallic layer kept apart by spacers. A current runs through the two layers - when the user touches the screen, the layers touch at that point. The computer detects the change in the electrical field and calculates the touch point. A resistive system will work with anything that touches the screen. These are the most inexpensive touch screen monitors.

Capacitive: This system has a layer that stores an electrical charge on top of the monitor's glass panel. When touched by a finger, circuits at each corner calculate where the capacitive charge is decreased. Capacitive touch screen systems transmit 20% more light than a resistive screen, providing a brighter picture. They require conductive input, such as a finger touch, to register input. Surface capacitive monitors can withstand up to 160 million touches.

Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW): This system has two transducers, one receiving, one sending, placed along the length and width of the monitor's glass plate. Reflectors are used to reflect the electrical signals sent from one transducer to the other to create a grid. The receiving transducer can detect if the wave has been altered by a touch and locates the touch point. While SAW touch screen monitor LCDs are more expensive than resistive or capacitive, they have the best image clarity and are intended for displaying high-detail graphics. Note: SAW touch screens are sensitive to liquids on the displays. Any liquid landing on the display will be interpreted as a touch.

Infrared: The infrared touchscreen system uses an array of infrared LED and photodetectors around the screen to create a grid. The system is set up to detect any touch to the screen that disrupts the grid, regardless if it is a finger, stylus or pen. Infrared screens have a high level of optical clarity and durability.

The type of touch screen monitor LCD you select will be contingent upon factors such as the intended users and the operating environment (retail, in the field, or industrial usage).

Face Treatments In order to protect the LCD screen, certain LCD monitors may incorporate a protective glass overlay, or even vandal-proof glass. There are also several screen treatments/films to improve image quality in various lighting conditions. Anti-glare and anti-reflective films reduce those bothersome issues. Optical Bonding entails injecting an optical-grade resin between the LCD panel and the outer glass, thereby greatly reducing reflections in outdoor use. Sunlight readable monitors are extremely bright (1,000 nits +) and can be used in direct bright sunlight.

Monitor Housing Industrial monitors are available in a wide range of enclosures. Standard ABS enclosures will suffice for some applications. Others may require steel housings for greater impact resistance, or IP or NEMA rated models to resist dust, dirt and liquids. Open frame monitors are often used when monitors are embedded in machinery or kiosks.

Mounting Many industrial monitors have standard VESA-pattern mounting holes on the rear panel to facilitate mounting. These accommodate a variety of wall mounts, ceiling brackets and tabletop stands.

Rack mount monitors can be mounted in EIA-standard 19" racks. This space-saving design enables the user to view anywhere from 7 to 10 separate video screens in one 19"-wide enclosure. The most common is dual 7" and triple 5" LCD screens. This is common in broadcast, A/V, industrial, and control room installations.

Panel mount monitors enable LCD monitors to be embedded in machinery, walls or panels. An over-sized front bezel secures the monitor to the opening. The front panels may or may not be waterproof. The monitor housing may be standard or open frame.

Mobile monitors used in vehicles such as police cars, trucks, buses, etc., may be pedestal-mounted from the floor, secured to the dashboard, or mounted from the roof as a flip-down design.

There are numerous factors to consider when selecting the best industrial monitor for your application. Be sure to do your homework!
