Cold therapy, by comparison, reduces the amount of blood in the area. This often has many of the same effects as heat, such as reducing muscle spasms as well as reducing inflammation. When using ice as a type of cold therapy, be sure that the ice itself never touches the skin, as this could add skin injury to the problem. Be sure to always wrap ice in a cloth before placing it on the back.
Often these two types of treatment are alternated for maximum pain relieving benefit. This is because using only one type of temperature related therapy can cause the muscles to cease reacting to it. If this happens, it can cause more harm than good in the long run.
Bed Rest Helps Some Back Pain
Oftentimes, depending upon the type of back pain, the best thing that can be done is bed rest. This will allow the muscles in the back to rest and recuperate before they are required to work again. However, caution must be taken to limit the amount of time in bed as this could make things worse. It is best to not use bed rest for a treatment for more than three days.
Treating Back Pain with Physical Therapy
Physical therapy is another avenue, a very popular avenue for the treatment of back pain. The hot and cold therapy mentioned above is often used in conjunction with physical therapy because using the two together increases the effectiveness of both. Physical therapy can be anything from simple stretching exercises at home to multiple visits to a therapist's office.
Try a Chiropractor
Depending upon the type and severity of the issue causing the back pain, you doctor may recommend a visit to a chiropractor. If you have never seen a chiropractor before, the idea may be unfamiliar to you at first; however, there is nothing to fear. Chiropractors are highly trained in how the spine works and how it affects the rest of the body. They can often realign the spine to help with back pain issues.
