A cloud computing systems architecture can be divided into three sub divisions, viz., the back end, the network, and the front end. The front end is the side the computer user, or client, sees. The back end is the cloud section of the system. The back end and the front end connect to each other through a network, usually the Internet.

Cloud computing is a paradigm that is composed of several strata of services. These include services like Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS, Storage as a Service, Platform as a Service or PaaS, and Software as a Service or SaaS. A significant shift in workload is produced by the use of cloud computing system. Local computers are longer required to do all the heavy lifting when it comes to running applications. The network of computer machines that makes up the cloud handles the jobs instead. Hardware and software demands on the end users side decrease immensely. The only thing that a clients computer needs to be able to run is the cloud computing system's interface software, which can be as simple as a Web browser, such as Internet explorer, Mozilla Firefox web browser, etc. A cloud computing service provider takes care of the rest.

Different cloud computing or cloud hosting service providers have developed a variety of access models to cloud services. The access to these cloud based services is based on the standard Internet Protocols like Hypertext Transfer Protocol or HTTP, Representational state transfer or REST, Simple Object Access Protocol or SOAP, Extensible Markup Language or XML, and the infrastructure is based on widely used technologies, such as, virtualization. Cloud computing is the result of maturation and coming together of several prior computing concepts like grid computing, application hosting service, server hosting, utility computing, and virtualization.

In the realm of computing, virtualization can be defined as a process of creating a virtual version of a device or resource, such as a server, storage device, network or even an operating system where the framework divides the resource into one or more execution compartments. Server virtualization can be defined as the partitioning of a physical server into smaller virtual servers. In server virtualization, the resources of the server itself are hidden, or masked, from users, and software is used to divide the physical server into multiple virtual environments, known as virtual or private servers. Server virtualization has a great number of benefits. For example, virtualization technology lets each virtual server run its own operating system, and each virtual server can also be independently rebooted of one another. Server virtualization also heavily cuts down on the costs borne by a business as less hardware and infrastructure are required. Server virtualization technology also utilizes available resources to their fullest so it can also save businesses a lot on operational costs. For example, using a lower number of physical servers reduces hardware maintenance, and therefore, cuts down operational costs.
