Cognitive Depression Therapy-what Is It? And Will It Work For Me?

Depressive disorders affect approximately 18.8 million American adults or about 9.5% of the U.S

. population age 18 and older in a given year.

This includes major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and bipolar disorder. Pre-schoolers are the fastest-growing market for antidepressants. At least four percent of preschoolers - over a million - are clinically depressed.

And that is just in the USA, how many millions more are affected by some form of depression world wide? Many have tried various means to deal with their depression such anti-depressant medication, therapy or naturopathic remedies. Only to find out that nothing has worked.

Recently, there has been a lot of research about cognitive depression therapy, and the results are looking very promising. But before we talk about if this type of therapy will work for you, we first need to find out what this type of therapy is.

Cognitive depression therapy is based around the idea that we have preconceived notions about particular events because our emotions, through past experiences, have already decided how we will feel. In other words, our memories are influencing our present behavior.

Cognitive therapy is directed at 10 common cognitive distortions, or faulty thought patterns, that send us into depression. With cognitive therapy, a person learns to recognize and correct negative automatic thoughts. Over time, the depressed person will be able to discover and correct deeply held but false beliefs that contribute to the depression.

As an example, if you had a terrible break up at a restaurant, everything about that event such as the food you ate, the music you heard, the surrounding and anything else associated with that event could trigger a depressed episode.

Cognitive depression therapy also deals with other small situation that may occur in our everyday routine that we may have a tendency to over exaggerate. Such as if you tried to buy say a certain brand of gum at your local store and they tell you they are sold out of that particular brand.

Instead of accepting that fact as being factual, you may conclude that the store is purposefully holding something back on you out of resentment.

Cognitive depression therapy helps people to deal with these situations.

In order to tell whether or not you need this type of therapy it is good to keep a journal of the things that make our upset and send you into depression. By recognizing what triggers your negative feelings can be a big clue in learning how to solve them. If you find yourself becoming angry or upset over simple little things, then you probably do need this type of therapy.
