Comparing Electricity Prices Pays Off

With today's energy cost constantly on the rise

, it can really pay to compare electricity prices. Just like any other commodity, electricity is actually traded, just about the same way oil is. Often a group of states will merge and offer bids for future electricity rates. Over the past fifty years, electricity rates have risen gradually, and recent evidence shows pricing has fallen. So why are electricity cost currently going down when almost everything else is on the rise?

Deregulation plays a part in the costs of energy, even as we see natural gas costs skyrocketing, we find that our electricity prices are going down, somewhat.

Perhaps the best advice currently is to enrol in some sort of budget pay or protected rate plan that most electricity providers offer. This does "lock in" your costs for at least the next year, and you won't be hit with a sudden jump in your monthly bill in the heat of summer, or the frigidity of a long winter. These budget plans just make good sense and you will find you are not shocked when the latest electricity bill comes around. Ask your electricity provider if they have a plan, and enrol. If they don't, then encourage them to start one, they are beneficial to all parties concerned.

With all the information available on the Internet today, anyone can compare electricity prices any time they wish. Across the country energy prices vary and electricity is no exception. When looking up average rates for electricity in your area of the nation, keep in mind that even within a given section of the U.S., costs will be variable due to many reasons. Larger providers can usually offer lower prices because they deal in volume and when they buy, they buy more at a time. As the residential consumer we cannot just purchase large amounts of electricity at any given time. It's just not feasible. So our costs tend to be governed by what the "big boys" are paying at any given time.

A relatively recent concept, green energy, is encouraging each consumer to be more energy wise than ever before. By conserving our energy sources we all benefit in the long run.

An interesting movement currently out there is the "Campaign for Fair Electricity Rates". This grassroots organization encourages advocacy in the effort to fight high energy costs. They are assisting with our education, as the consumers, as well as business awareness. Congressional members combined with policy makers themselves each need to be made to realize that deregulation on the electricity wholesale market is not working. Costs have skyrocketed ever since deregulation first came to pass in many areas of the nation.

We must act now before prices climb any higher. Those who advocate the deregulation are stuffing their pockets with money, at our expense. Last winter's electric rates were devastating to many, particularly those on fixed incomes.

Energy deregulation hurts us all, from businesses to residential consumers. Everyone needs to compare electricity prices and determine what can be done to decrease costs.
