Cultivating a Positive Mental Attitude
Get started on making positive mental attitude a fundamental part of your approach to life right now with these 6 Tips to Kick-Start your PMA
1. Remain philosophical
When things go wrong, realize that things can't and won't always be perfect. Try and see the humour in the unexpected or the annoying. Try this litmus test whenever things go awry - ask yourself; 'Will I still find this event truly awful when I look back on it in 3 months time?' If the answer is no, stay calm, deal with the issue and remember that in a short while the present drama will be no more than a distant memory...
2. Trust that you can win
Prepare for the worst, but hope for the very best. Pro-actively do everything you can to get a positive result. Focusing on doom and gloom and all that could go wrong really isn't helpful to you or those around you. There is no joy in believing you will fail and then saying - 'see, I was right!' Be a credit to yourself and strive for success on a consistent basis. If things don't go according to plan, review point 1 and remain philosophical.
3. Take things one day at a time
Always break big task down into small chunks and take steps towards them, little-by little. This will increase the likelihood of you making some rapid 'quick wins' that will boost your confidence and keep you motivated. Set up some milestone points along the way and treat yourself at these check-points as a reward for your dedication and hard work.
4. Think things through
There is no challenge that is impossible to solve - certainly some are difficult, but they are possible nonetheless! Approach a problem from the standpoint that you haven't yet discovered the answer, rather than taking an 'it's hopeless' approach. Become an analyst of your problem. Step outside the emotion and ask yourself: ''What will it take to resolve this issue?''
5. Draft in support
Hire a qualified coach or enlist the help of positive, encouraging people in your life. Ask a trusted friend to tell you what they most like about you and what they think you do well personally and/or professionally and why.
Next, for one week, make a note of every positive comment and compliment that you receive. Keep this heart-warming feedback on stand-by for those days when the glass is looking distinctly empty. Miraculously it will fill up again when you remind yourself of all that you are capable of and the support and positive regard that others have for you.
6. Act 'as if'
Even if you are not 100% sure of success in a particular endeavour just yet, behave as if you have already made it! Trust in yourself and take a leap of faith.
Certainty will come with time, but even the great and the good are not always sure of everything. The secret we don't often realize is that no-one is, not all of the time. Don't beat yourself up about things - this is the ultimate confidence killer. Respect yourself and give yourself kudos for who and what you are right now (see point 5) and then (refer to point 1) and 'remain philosophical!'
Stay focused and act 'as if' you have already achieved the things that you desire.
Act positively, think positively, have faith and good things will come your way.
