Diesel Generators Provide Reliable Energy When The Power Goes Out

Everyone experiences power outages on occasion

. For most, it's a relatively minor inconvenience to lose power for a few hours during a storm or when a transformer blows. For others, both in residential and essential services municipal or commercial buildings, even a short power outage can be literally life-threatening. For these residences and buildings, stand-by generators are essential. In areas where power outages can last for days or power isn't available at all, such as rural and undeveloped areas, stand-by or portable generators can provide all the power that is needed for an extended amount of time.

Stand-by generators can provide anywhere from a few kilowatts (kw) of power to hundreds of kw of power depending on the needs of the systems and appliances that need to be run. They are permanently installed and hardwired to the existing building or home electrical system, often powered from the natural gas source. They can also be powered from built in fuel tanks. When installed with an automatic sensor and switch, a stand-by generator can be designed to start automatically whenever power is interrupted.

Portable generators are smaller and less costly than stand-by generators and feature built-in fuel tanks. They are excellent for residential use or to provide power in remote locations. With standard power outlets, ordinary extension cords can be used to power appliances for short periods. They must be used outside only and never indoors since the fumes they produce can be deadly in unventilated areas.

Generators can be designed for different fuels including gasoline, diesel, natural gas, or liquid propane. Natural gas and propane generators are typically stand-by generators, permanently installed to use one of these fuel sources depending on what is available in the area. Diesel generators are the most popular choice for portable generators since they are dependable, less expensive to operate, safer to store, and require less maintenance. Today's generator technology allows diesel generators to burn cleanly with a minimum of smoke. Gasoline operated generators are less expensive to purchase but require more maintenance. Gasoline can't be stored as long as diesel fuel making a portable diesel generator a better choice for emergency readiness.

Owning a stand-by or portable generator that is ready and able to take over during a power outage to run essential systems and appliances offers comfort and peace of mind to home and business owners who know they are prepared for any emergency.
