Deep down, each of us wants to help those who are less fortunate than we are

One charity scam which has been prevalent in the past few years is helping families and children overseas. The public is flooded with brochures and images on television predicting starving children or destitute families. Of course, no one wishes to see children or families suffer starvation or disease, but donating any money to an organization without complete knowledge of how it will be distributed is never a smart idea. Within the past few years, several scams have demonstrated that the money collected for various charities have instead gone right into the scammers pockets and never reach the needy recipients. Unfortunately, the occurrence of such flagrant deceits has tainted all charities, and many of these organizations are authentic, working diligently to help those in need.

Charitable organizations use magazines, mailings, television, the Internet, and other means to reach a wide audience. Their requests typically start at ten dollars and go up from there. The advertising itself is expensive, and much of the money goes for this purpose.

In one case, a charity organization was authentic, completely registered, and really did send money and resources to foreign countries. Unfortunately, federal investigate showed that almost ninety percent of all donations were used to pay the large salaries of the directors for the charity. As such, this organization was not considered a true charity and was considered a scam.

Charity scams come in many forms. It can be a plea for the homeless, the destitute, animals, and just about anything else. Proper investigation is the only way to tell if a charity is real or counterfeit. Investigations can be done yourself on the Internet or by checking with the Better Business Bureau, the Consumer Complaint Agency, or some other way. Volunteers that go from door to door with cans collecting for a familiar organization are certainly open to suspicion.
