Does Green Tea Help Improve Metabolism? - The Facts Separated From Fiction

In recent years, there has been an explosion in the popularity of tea products in the United States

. Partially brought about due to American citizens looking for healthier options in their diets, beverages like green tea have seen a surge in sales. Another reason that the drink is enjoying an increase in popularity is due to many different health benefits that it presents. Although these health benefits have been known in China and other countries for ages now, American citizens are finally just now learning about the many benefits presented by the various types of tea. However, like a lot of other health claims with various products, it is always important to do a little extra digging to separate the facts from fiction.

Green tea has been linked to a number of different health benefits. Some of these claims have facts and in depth clinical studies to back them up while others have no scientific data standing behind them. One of the claims deals with this specific type of tea and metabolism. Unlike some of the unsubstantiated claims made about tea, this one happens to have some science to go along with it. Back in the late 90's, there was a study done that showed that green tea does in fact seem to increase the rate of fat oxidation, which in turn means that the metabolic rate is also higher.

In this particular study, a total ten younger men, all whom were in good health, were each given a random meal that was assigned to them. These meals had one of three different metabolism treatments in them: caffeine, extract from green tea and a placebo. Then, they were put into a special respiratory chamber that was designed to measure their energy output as well as their body's heat production. The final results showed that those who took the tea extract had an increase in their heat production by about 4 percent. This group also showed an overall increase of about 4.5 percent their energy output.

That is not the only thing that this specific type of tea is good for. Experts also agree that green tea has other health benefits due to it being an antioxidant. An antioxidant is responsible for stopping free radicals from forming in the body. These radicals are the cause behind such things as cancer and other diseases. The flavonoids found in the tea, which give it its flavor, are believed to be where the antioxidants are located.
