The 80-20 rule applies here. Briefly, 20% of the knowledge you have will let you do 80% of what you want. What you will want to learn is the most common fundamental things about electricity and circuits. Then you will not have to call the electician anymore. You can do them yourself!
The second item to look for, after you have the basics down, is a system that will teach you advanced topics as you need them. If you are not needing to put in a new outlet, you dont need to be forced to learn that from at the begining. When do need to put one in, you want the comfort knowing you have easy access to that information. With a great course, most people find they can begin to perform basic jobs immediately. As time goes on and your skills progress, you can learn more advanced topics as you need.
In fact, there is an old saying: Use it or Lose it. Even though you learned something new right now, when you need it in the future you have forgotten that piece of knowledge. You just didn't practice enough and remember it. This happens to everyone.
