Events To See In San Francisco

San Francisco is a great west coast city with so much to do

. It is home to many popular attractions including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman's Wharf, and Chinatown. But did you know San Francisco is also home to many annual events?

A neat thing about this city is no matter what time of year you go, there is usually always something exciting happening. So take a look at your calendar and figure out when you will be in San Francisco next.

Then read this article and see which events will be taking place during your next visit. Starting in January one event you will not want to miss is the arrival of the sea lions!

Each year during mid-January these interesting creatures return in herds to the Bay Area. If you are there in January head to Pier-39 and watch as these amazing animals get situated in their new home.

Also during January (and sometimes February) is a large Chinese New Year celebration. With the largest Chinatown outside of Asia located in this city, they will for sure be throwing a great celebration.

Events include a parade, a flower fair, and a street fair. February is a time for the annual crab festival, the Pacific Orchid Exposition, and the Historic Fisherman's Wharf Classic Car Exhibit.

If you happen to be in town for Valentine's Day you might want to check out Roaring Camp Railroads where you and your valentine can ride for free. In March visitors will be entertained by the St. Patrick's Day Parade.

It is one of the longest running parades in the U.S. and features music, dancing, and more. Those attending can also try some authentic Irish cuisine.

Another fun event during this month is the Street Performer's Festival. This interesting show is full of performances and takes place each year on the last weekend of March at Pier 39.

During April a few fun things to do are check out the Easter Egg Hunt at Roaring Camp Railroads, visit the Northern California Cherry Blossom Festival in Japantown, or browse the Sidewalk Arts and Crafts Show. One last notable April event is Opening Day on the Bay.

This event focuses on a festive boat parade starting at Pier 39. Heading into May you will find plenty to see including the International Children's Festival, the Sea Music Festival, and the Mural Awareness Month Festival.

June is a fun month to visit because one of the largest art fairs in the country, Union Street Festival, takes place. Also during this month are the North Beach Fair and the Haight Street Fair.

If headed to the city for the Fourth of July you will enjoy a day full of music and fireworks. These events take place at both Pier 39 and the Cannery.

Also in July for music lovers is the Fillmore Street Jazz Festival. Heading into August you will find the San Francisco Aloha Festival and the Nihonmachi Street Fair.

In September make sure to put the Chocolate Festival on your calendar. This event takes place at Ghirardelli Square and is all about chocolate!

You could also check out the Shakespeare Festival during this month. October is another fun month to visit because it hosts Fleet Week: a time to celebrate the Navy's birthday as you enjoy live bands and an air show.

A few other highlights in October are the Excelsior Festival, Octoberfest by the Bay, and the Castro Street Fair. November has the San Mateo Harvest Festival, which features a large, indoor arts and crafts show.

It also has live entertainers, dancers, puppet shows and more. Another fun thing to do in November is prepare for the holiday season by visiting the Tree Lighting Ceremony at Ghirardelli Square.

Not only will you see the lighting of the beautiful, 50-foot tree, but there will also be carolers and Santa Claus to help kick off the Christmas season. In December the holiday festivities continue with another Holiday Tree Lighting in downtown San Mateo as well as a Great Dickens Christmas Fair.

Another tradition during this month is the Nutcracker. Performed by one of the best ballet companies in the country, it takes place each December at the War Memorial Opera House.

As you can see, no matter what time of year you visit, there is always something going on in San Francisco. You are sure to have an enjoyable trip!
