Until recently, executive coaching was kept under wraps
. It was something no one talked about. Executive coaches were only brought in when a leader was in trouble. Things have changed for the better. Now, executive management accepts the presence of coaches as a way to continuously upgrade their skills, learn about the latest management trends, and become an even better manager. Many executives are overwhelmed with the everyday realities of their positions. Even the most organized individual is feeling a bit frazzled. Coaches can help them sort through their "to do" list and focus on the priorities.
Today's business climate is fast paced and dynamic. Executive managers are expected to produce winning strategies and streamline processes and increase productivity. Executive coaching helps keep all of this in perspective and provides guidance to their clients. The managers still do all of the work, collect all of the data and set their own course, but the coaches provide insight to help them keep their company's goals and vision firmly in sight. They may help the manager focus on goal setting, team building, or decision making. This clears the clutter that fills their day with distractions.
Executive coaches and business coaches have some of the same duties, such as helping the manager focus on achieving results, recruiting and developing talent. Executive coaching helps sharpen existing skills and become more productive in a shorter period of time. Coaches provide input and training related to becoming a better leader and handling conflict in a positive manner. Often an executive coach helps the manager maneuver through team building strategies, such as how to get their teams to come to a consensus on strategic planning. Often, they need to effectively communicate the challenges they themselves are facing or how to spend more time setting direction than putting out fires.
Executives need an understanding ear and someone to give them the facts about their performance. If executive coaching is part of your business, make sure your boss is satisfied with the results and get feedback. Communicate with your supervisors to let them know what areas of development you are focusing on. Many managers take a progress measurement from their direct reports to ensure they are on the right path. Most coaching contracts have a definitive end point. A list of goals and accomplishments that you hope to achieve during this time will help you stay focused, making the most of the opportunity.
