Flight Instructors Remember The Legacy Of September 11, But Flight Instructors Still Have To Stay Al
Ten years after 9/11, government screening has made more difficult for non-American
students to enroll in civilian flight training institutions because America being an inviting place place to learn to fly fast.
The most labor intensive background checks don't actually apply to every student and teacher, so schools need to be wary of any possible terrorists.
I have the phone number of the local Federal Burea of Investigation tacked to my wall. Before 9/11 I wouldn't have posted the FBI agent number for easy access. said the Director of training, Patrick Murphy, at
Sunrise Aviation Flight Training located in Ormond Beach, Florida
Hundreds of United States flight institutions compete for students. In Florida, many flight training institutions pitch the excellent weather to encourage students to fly an increased number of hours in order to complete their programs. This is what the hijackers that carried out the attacks on the Twin Towers were looking for.
3 of the 9/11 hijackers were in Florida flight training institutions located in Florida are right in being cautious. Three of the hijackers on September 11 were simulating flights within 6 months of getting to Venice, Florida. The leader, Mohamed Atta, as well as Marwan al Shehhi were students of a Florida flight institution's program, Ziad Jarrah was part of a different, flight school located in the same area.
The terrorists were able to get licenses and certifications in spite of the fact they were often rowdy and gave poor performances.
The U.S. investigators found that Atta and Shehhi took solo flights and passed their pilot tests. At another school where they signed up later, the training instructor flagged the two for their abrasiveness and aggression, noting that they sometimes tried to seize the controls during training flights. They did not pass the examination on their rating of instruments. They went straight back to Huffman with no reservations. In the meantime, Jarrah received his certificate for piloting a private single engine aircraft.
Hani Hanjour studied in Arizona for his private license to pilot a plane and got it within three months. After several months of training you are awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration a commercial pilot certificate. He began training on a simulator for the Boeing 737 by the beginning of 2001. The Commission has said that his work had been found substandard by his instructor and he was advised to quit, but he kept with it and graduated just five and a half month before the attacks.
Entering these days would not be easy for the men in a United States flight institutions.
Foreign students seeking flight training in the US have a stricter visa process. They are unable to start without the approval of the TSA. Air travel security uses a background check with the FBI"s assistance, to run their name against terrorist watch lists. Every year, TSA agents visit certified flight schools, they verify students' identities and make sure that their visas have not expired.
In addition, TSA gives its found information to other governmental organizations and also has layers of security created to catch criminals before they can act and do harm even if they managed to receive flight instruction in the US.
The new admissions measures for flight school are not consistent and fool-proof. If they are only training a few flight instructors who still have simulators and planes available to them, will be free from yearly TSA agent visits and only get random visits from time to time.
The FAA keeps a database of the names of student pilots and this is accessible by the TSA.
