Indigo sat has become the first aircraft satellite tracking company to have had one of its devices, the Indigo one, successfully installed in a B737-300.
The aircraft operated by Safair Operations, based at OR Tambo International Airport, near Johannesburg, and is part of an ongoing project being overseen by the Johannesburg office of IndigoSat.
The partnership between Indigo Sat (South Africa) and Safair goes back to 2009 when the company fitted its tracking devices to Safairs L100 and L382 Hercules aircraft. Since then the partnership has grown and eventually culminated with the installation and fitment of Indigo One system, such as Lear,Cessna,Beechcraft,Bell,Eurocopter,Bombardier,Ilyushin,Antonov,Embraer and a DC-3,to name but a few types.
Indigo Sat was incorporated in Australia in 2007 in order to provide a platform from which to launch the Indigo One satellite tracking system, and Indigo Sat (South Africa) provides sales distribution and technical support throughout the EMEA region. The Indigo One is manufactured in Australia under manufacturing approval from the Australian Civil Aviation and Safety Authority (CASA).
Indigo Sat has emerged as a global market leader in satellite tracking and aircraft management-how aircraft operators gather and manage critical flight, maintenance and duty time information. The Indigo One avionics hardware monitors the movement of an aircraft ,and reports on important events ,such as power on, engine on,0010 times-off(chocks off) ,out (takeoff) In (landing) and On (choks on) engine off and power down. Additional inputs can report on events in the aircraft such as landing gear, flaps operation and many more.
Using satellite communication to report this information back to the aircrafts operations centre, the system also provides real-time flight following,bi-directional communication, an emergency function and flight data recording of up to 4500 hours of flight.
Unlike portable tracking systems which can become unplugged or are easily tampered with, the Indigo One automatically delivers the information to the operator, eliminating data capture errors, reducing back-office time, and integrating directly with a number of management software systems, such as Air Maestro.
Also, the Indigo One is fully certified for aviation use. Including DO-160 certification, and holds a number of STCs from the FAA, EASA, CASA and other civil aviation organizations.
With clients in over 50 countries around the world, including the Royal Flying Doctor Service,Mission Aviation Fellowship, Deccan Aviation, the Maldivian Air Taxi and the majority of operators on united Nations contracts, the Indigo Sat system has proven its reliability and cost-effectiveness.
The system can be configured specifically for helicopter operations, taking into account the different flight characteristics compared with fixed-wing aircraft; all functions, including the reporting interval, can be configured via satellite .The data recorded during the flight is invaluable in determining operational trends, comparison of standard operating procedures, and incident review.
With an increased requirement for real-time information for decision-making, as well as safety management systems and an expected reduction in satellite communication costs over the next few years, the Indigo Sat systems are ideally positioned to meet the needs of commercial, military and general aviation operators the world over, something Safair is already enjoying.
