Get to know yourself better by learning the tarot system
I discovered the Tarot in 1999 when I was already using the I Ching for divination. I use them both now but feel they have quite different uses but are complimentary too. I don't believe anyone can be an 'expert' in tarot interpretation and would never pay anyone to do a reading for me. The cards have fluid and dynamic meanings and evolve as I do. No one really knows what the cards mean and that's what I love about them. However, I think understanding comes when you analyse the cards yourself and see how one moves on to the next - the same with each suit. The tarot deck is, after all, a deck of 'playing' cards and it is through creative play that the cards will become your friends ...
Why do I use tarot cards? If the world is a mirror then getting to know ourselves is even more important than we thought; if we know ourselves we'll know the world too. The tarot deck is a brilliant method to discover who we really are and dispel the myths of who we imagine we are. Simple cardboard squares with colourful pictures on they may be, but when used together as a system they reveal an incredible wisdom that anyone can learn to use for their own benefit. You can discover your motives and the deeper truths about yourself, allowing you to act more skilfully in your life and understand why you act as you do. The only way to learn the meanings of the tarot cards is to get yourself a deck and start using them! Initially you'll have to accept the card definitions that others have come up with, but if take those definitions as basis for your own study you can start to see the mystery revealed and adapt them to your own situations, and evolution as a self aware human being.
There are many books on the tarot system of divination and if you read just a few you will discover what is agreed upon and what isn't. You'll see the obvious misunderstandings posing as wisdom and feel elation when someone else's description rams a personal truth home. You'll get frustrated when a writer pens hundreds of words on one card that she has clearly got wrong, and you'll feel appreciative when another writer leads you to an understanding that you can work with.Ultimately though your best bet is to work out what the cards mean yourself: it might take years but it is an enjoyable experience and the learning process itself will reveal much of value and use.
