Before purchasing a shredder for personal or business use you should familiarize yourself with all the myths and know the truths behind them. Sometimes things are simply taken completely out of context and you as a consumer should know the truth.

The most common myth about this practice is that not all businesses have to shred. Laws have been passed to protect the privacy of consumers and inevitably stop identity theft as well. These particular laws say that businesses have to maintain all of their customer's personal information and destroy it properly. But certain states have different laws about these particular issues as well, so always check beforehand.

HIPAA is the dominating force behind all the laws, as they require all patient information to be disposed of properly. That goes for medical records and financial records as well. So that is one myth that has been completely shattered, all companies should shred their documents.

Another very popular myth is that no one will ever look through your rubbish. That is not always the case, as you have cleaning staff that come late at night to tidy up the building. When they are emptying the bins they could pick up a document and see any information about clients. The cleaning staff member then puts the content in the outside bin and there have been many stories of people going in dumpsters to search for recyclables and other things as well. When people are going through dumpsters and they find personal information they are supposed to report it to the police and media but that is not always the case, which is inevitably how identity theft begins, so you should always be careful.

The third most popular myth is that it is better to have too many documents. That is completely not true, the more documents a company has the more it has to keep up with. However, as things are changing, many companies are converting their documents to files on computers and other electronic devices. Companies are required by law to have a certain number of documents and files on each specific person though.

There are many myths about document shredding, but it is very important for companies to properly destroy old files. If they don't and someone finds them, it will inevitably have adverse effects on everybody who is involved.
