Getting ready for the big Digital Switchover

The Digital Switchover is happening and there's no avoiding it so embrace your digital future and get ready for life without the aerial; a life without the need to climb onto the roof at 3 in the morning just to fiddle about with it'. This was never really advisable or convenient at the best of times, no matter how fuzzy the picture; so perhaps it's not the end of the world that the ariel will soon be an annoyance consigned to the past, much like the slinky and the New Kids on the Block.

For whatever reason, better known to those more technologically adept, analogue signals just don't cut the mustard in this day and age as we all now seem to require a lot more choice on our screens than the meagre five channels we have been used to for so many years.

We want more reality TV, more home and cookery ideas, sport, fashion tips and really more of everything in general. This may leave us with very little free time to try out any of the wonderful life-enhancing ideas our TV has taught us, but nevertheless, it is time for us to cast our viewing nets and eager minds wider than ever before.

For the switchover to be a success, you will need to do a couple of things, if you haven't done so already. First, it's a good idea to check the official website or local newspapers for information on when the switch will be happening in your area; rather than waking up one morning and starting at a black, soundless screen for an hour before finally realising that it's all gone ahead without you and you weren't infact just watching an episode of the Sky at Night'. Secondly, if you don't already have one you will need to get a Freeview box installed so that you can receive the new digital signal. The cost will vary depending on the box you choose, whether you want to pay for even more additional channels and how many TVs you have in your home that require converting.

Like most technology before it, and probably most to come after, as a nation it will take us a while to get used to the idea of there being no analogue signal. However, hopefully in time the crossover to digital will prove to be a success, and after all, any technology that prevents anyone having to get on their roof to "fix" their ariel can't be all that bad, can it?
