Good Communication Skills Are Vital To Leadership

If there is one characteristic common to every good leader that thing has got to

be the fact that every effective leader is effective because he or she is an excellent communicator. If you are to be effective as a leader or supervisor you must be able to make people understand your intent. The really good leaders have a way of communicating to the masses but they also know that each person is an individual and the thing that works well with one person may not work at all with another.

People all have their own distinct individual personalities and also grow up in different environments. A gesture may mean one thing to a Korean person but it may mean something totally different to a teenager from the Bronx. Good leaders know how to get their point across well enough to make their followers understand clearly what they are required to do.

In order to communicate a good leader must be able to effectively read the body language of his followers. He or she must know when they have been understood and when they havent. The good leader must be able to determine the mindset and intent of his or her followers also. Understanding your followers helps you to know how to use them to get the job done. The good leader will apply personnel to handle problems as their ability and motivational level dictates.

A successful salesman is the person that has the ability to get inside of the mind of his customers and determine exactly what they want or need. Many times this is extremely difficult to do because the customer may not have a clear picture of what they want. If a salesman is good he or she knows their product and its capabilities. That salesman will communicate those abilities to the customer as need be. You wont waste time attempting to sell a customer a paint sprayer when the problem that they have can be solved with a wet vacuum.

The successful military commander must be able to instill his personal values into his subordinates so that they will be able to function as he would in the heat of battle. This is the essence of all military training. The soldier must react or behave in a prescribed way in time of trouble. The only way to reach this goal is through successful communication.

The successful leader must be flexible enough to communicate to the king as well as the pauper so that each one understands his point perfectly well. He or she will have to deal with each individual in a way that he or she understands. You may have to talk to the king as a king and to the pauper as another pauper.

The successful leader also understands nonverbal communication and knows that body language doesnt lie. He or she doesnt have to have completed a course in understanding nonverbal communication but just needs to have the savy to understand nonverbal cues. This can be taught but the good leader knows by intuition.

Good leaders also know how to use tone and inflection in their voices to get their point across. They know how people will respond to voice tone and use it either consciously or unconsciously in their communication. Riceland Enterprises
