Green Initiative Around The House
Believe it or not, going green is not as hard as you may think! A few small changes
can make all the difference to the environment (and your household bills), so check out these five useful tips:
Save water
It might seem to rain all the time in the UK, but river and reservoir levels can become worryingly low so its important to save water. Start by swapping baths for showers and turn the tap off when youre brushing your teeth. Make sure all dishwasher and washing machines are completely full before turning them on and only boil the water you plan to use.
Turn lights off
According to the Energy Saving Trust (EST),
lighting accounts for eight per cent of a typical households energy bills. As a result, you must turn the lights off when you leave a room and to rely on natural light whenever possible. Its also a good idea to swap all conventional light bulbs for energy efficient alternatives, as these are more efficient at converting energy to light. Please note, all clear, traditional bulbs will be off the shelves by September 2012, so its worth taking action now.
Replace your boiler
Statistics released by the EST reveal that boilers account for 60 per cent of what you spend on energy. If theyre not working properly, they can really drain your bank balance so try converting to an A-rated high-efficiency condensing boiler and update your heating controls.
Arrange a boiler service every year to make sure all parts are functioning properly and you could save a lot of money in the long-run.
Turn down the heat
If you turn down the temperature on your washing machine, youll simultaneously reduce your CO2 emissions while still getting the stains out of your laundry. Washing at 30C with a low-temperature detergent should do the job just fine, so dont set your machine overly high if you dont need to. The only times it might be useful to turn up the heat is if youre washing bedding, or if someones been poorly and you want to kill the germs.
Pay your bills online
Despite all your energy saving efforts, you will inevitably receive bills but hopefully theyll be more manageable. When they arrive, try paying them online and put a stop to any paper records that are sent through the post. This is much more efficient and will help you organise your finances, without being bombarded by letters.
The economy is in a fragile state at the moment, so do all you can to save money and protect the environment as you go.
