What is HEPA?

HEPA is an acronym for High Efficiency Particulate Air filter. This is a type of a very efficient air filter that is composed of a mat of randomly arranged fibers. These fibers are usually made of fiberglass and have diameters ranging from 0.5 to 2.0 micrometers. Unlike ordinary sieves that still allow particles much smaller than their openings to pass through, the HEPA air filter traps even smaller particles. It does this through a combination of three mechanisms. The first of these mechanisms is the one known as Interception. This is where particles moving through a line of flow in the air stream come within one radius of a fiber and just stick to it. The second of these mechanisms is the one known as Impaction, where larger particles are unable to avoid fibers by following the curving contours of the air stream. These bigger particles are then forced to embed in one of them directly. This effect increases with diminishing fiber separation and higher air flow velocity. The last one is Diffusion. This is an enhancing mechanism that arises from the collision of gas molecules and the smallest particles, especially those below 0.1 micrometer in diameter, which are thereby hindered and delayed in their path through the filter.
