Hot New Kitchen Design and Appliances

The times are changing. The kitchen used to be the domain of the woman of the household, and men were pretty much unwelcome. However, today's society makes it necessary for the man and the woman to share responsibilities. This is spilling over into the kitchen, where men and women are taking turns cooking meals, doing dishes, shopping, and performing all of the other chores that are centralised within the confines of the house's kitchen area. This new situation is influencing kitchen design and making people question traditionally-accepted concepts like the work triangle.

The work triangle was first developed by the University of Illinois Small Homes Council in the 1950s. This concept is basically that a person should be able to imagine a line that connects the centre of the sink with the centre of the range or cook top and the centre of the refrigerator and back to the sink to make a triangle. If connecting these areas creates a balanced triangle, it stands to reason that the distances travelled between the work areas of the room would be equal and most efficient. However, the increase in the amount of appliances and work centres in modern kitchens is causing experts to reconsider just how valid the concept of the work triangle truly is. For example, it is fairly undeniable that the microwave oven is on the same level of importance as the refrigerator, sink, and stovetop in most of today's kitchens.

For these reasons, it makes sense for most people to redesign their kitchens into two-cook operations that include two wok separate work triangles, which do not intersect with one another. This can be done by installing new appliances, like an upright freezer or a more streamlined refrigerator, that create more walkway space. The Bosch fridge and Bosch fridge freezer are probably the most popular and well-made of these appliances, but any upright freezers of more compact refrigerator units will help to make it possible for a kitchen to accommodate two separate work triangles.

Another idea is to add an island in the centre of the kitchen. This will make it possible for two people to use the range while staying on the other side of the appliance from each other. An island allows the other person the space with which to perform their task, while performing one's own chore. The island also increases countertop space, which allows for a more work areas that can be utilized by the other cook. This is a huge improvement.

With the increasingly varied work schedules of the common family, the two work triangle kitchen design just makes sense. It is certainly worth taking into consideration when the time comes to replace old appliances and upgrade the home kitchen area.
