How to Choose Speakers
The type of stereo speakers you get should depend on your audio preferences and the music you usually listen to. The main difference between speakers lies in fidelity, or to put in another words, whether their sound is true to the original performance. One group of speakers maintain a clean and accurate sound, while the second group reproduces the sound with "color". Choosing between these to groups is strictly a matter of personal taste.
The first kind of sound the clean and accurate sound is provided by sealed box speakers. These speakers are usually floorstanding or bookshelf speakers, which means that they take up some room space. Floorstanding speakers are usually the choice of the fine-eared, because they provide the highest level of sound fidelity. Bookshelf speakers are smaller than floorstanding speakers, but they are still able to provide a higher fidelity than other types of speakers.
If space is an issue, you might choose to compromise sound fidelity and go for the the other option, combining satellite speakers with a subwoofer. If you really love that deep bass sound, getting two subwoofers will upgrade your experience significantly. Another option is to install in-wall speakers that take no space at all (and you can improve their sound by using a back box). Note though that in-wall speaker require professional installation.
An essential component of your home stereo is the amplifier or the receiver. There has to be a correspondence between the speakers power requirements and the receiver capability to provide it. The receiver is responsible for providing power but also to handle the peaks that occur when music is played. Speaker sensitivity is the decibel output of the speaker (also called speaker efficiency). The sensitivity range runs from very inefficient (85db) to very efficient (105 db). The more efficient the speaker, the less amplifier power it needs in order to provide similar performance levels. A strong amplifier is required to cover for inefficient speakers, but even then, you might lose out on fidelity because of the dynamic range.
Another task the amplifier should do it to ensure a smooth reproduction of the full range of sounds while listening. This is called a dynamic range, and it is essential for the receiver to have it in order to reproduce accurate sound.
