Originally introduced in the market in November 2007, the Amazon Kindle is an e-book reader that features wireless 3G technology allowing users to download books, newspaper and magazine sites. Coming equipped with a 6" 800 x 600 display, 180MB internal storage, scroll wheel, standard mini USB port, 3.5mm headphone jack, SD slot, and EVDO data, the Kindle offers a wide range of features and uses. In particular: a) Downloading e-books The Kindle natively supports TXT and AZW file formats, which is the exclusive format used by content download from Amazon. Users who want to use other file formats such as HTML, DOC, JPG, GIF, PNG and BMP need to go through a conversion process that convert these files to readable AZW files. Users are required to email their document to a particular @kindle.com email address and pay $.10 per file for conversion if they choose to send it directly to their Kindle via EVDO. Instead, they can have the converted file sent back to their personal email address @free.kindle.com and then transferred to the Kindle via a wired USB connection. For instance, if the Kindle email ID is peter@kindle.com then attachments need to be sent to peter@free.kindle.com for the files to be converted and emailed to the associated Amazon account. PFD files are not supported by the Kindle nor can they be converted by Amazon. They have been added to Kindle 2 because they are widely used for academic texts, presentations, and eBooks. Hence, failing to support or convert them is a real drawback for the Kindle. E-books can be downloaded from several online services, not just Amazon.com, at relatively reasonable prices. Besides, the Kindle supports MP3 and Audible formats 2, 3 and 4 that can be downloaded through a direct USB connection. b) Keyboard features The Kindles keyboard is a quite uncomfortable thumb keyboard that is not the most convenient way to type in URLs and search for stored content. Besides, it features limited web-browsing capabilities offering mainly access to the Kindle e-book store. Perhaps its main drawback is its large page-turning buttons that are placed on its right and left edges, making difficult to handle. On the other hand, it allows users to insert notes as they read, capture a screenshot or even advance to the next section when listening to an audio book. These are great features that are extremely helpful. c) PC connectivity Having limited port access and being designed to function on its own, the Kindle doesnt have to be connected to a PC. As it features a free EVDO cellular 3G connection to the Internet over Sprint, it allows users to transfer content through it and browse on the web without JavaScript. In that way, users can make use of websites like Wikipedia for free. Overall, the Kindle is a user-friendly e-book reader that allows direct downloading from Amazon and several other sources, as well as file conversion to the AZW format. Users can also listen to MP3 files while reading along and use the keyboard feature to search for content. Using the control panel introduces users to many features and if they want to connect it their PC, they can do so through the USB port.About the Author:
