Hydroponic Systems- A New Trend In Family Gardening

In this modern age, there is a new trend in family gardening which is known as hydroponics

. Exactly what is hydroponic? It is an interesting question to know.

This system first was developed in 17th century. According to this system, soil is not needed to grow plants. Soil only used as a reservoir for water and nutrients that enable plants to access the nutrient exactly they needed. The plants grow rapidly, if water mixture is replaced by properly balanced, nutrient rich solution. Here two questions have arisen. What kinds of hydroponic systems should be there? And what kind of system is appropriate for me.

These systems could be divided in two main parts and several sub parts. The first kind is solution culture and other is known as medium culture. According to solution culture, plants have no solid medium for their root systems. Primarily solution culture is of three kinds static, continuous flow and aeroponics. When a solid natural medium is used in plants root systems, it is known as medium culture. There are some kind of medium culture are sand, gravel, coir, or rock wool. No matter what kind of system is selected and plants roots systems cannot completely covered by plant root system. In such situation, the plants do not get enough air and will die.

In case of static solution systems, pots of nutrient solution can be used to grow plants. Now according to elementary school experiment where a potato is cut in half then put off in water in a mason jar. Whenever water label is too low then we add more water. Thus it is basic form of solution culture. Exclusion is that here we are using a nutrient solution instead of plain tap water. With using this system we can control the nutrient solution levels which cannot be done with continuous flow system. If levels are too low, the plants can not get enough food and finally get die.

In case of continuous flow hydroponic systems, we use a pump to move the nutrient solution past the plants' roots at a constant rate.

Neutral medium can be used with either the static solution or continuous flow solution systems. The medium used must be purely a personal preference. Medium can be used to tolerate the plants' roots should not become completely flooded. In such situation the root systems do not get enough air and the plants will die.
