International Shipping Challenges For Small Business
The internet has revolutionized the way we look at global trade and has made boundaries disappear
. Today, it hardly matters whether someone is in Australia or United States they are all people on the internet with whom you can have interactions like you do with your neighbors. This has also redefined global commerce, especially e-commerce but when there is actual shipping of products involved, there are many challenges that sellers face when shipping internationally. In fact, many small companies just turn down international orders because they dont know how best to satisfy their international customers.
Some international shipping challenges are obvious there are different barriers that sellers would face, from communication problems to cultural differences to shipping guarantees. If the seller is on a feedback-type mechanism (like eBay), he must ensure that the international customers are as happy as domestic ones. For this, it is sometimes required to understand the cultural differences and can prove to be a risk to the small business or individual.
Another huge challenge involved is the cost. If it is a small package, it can be transported by air but for heavier packages, air transport can be very expensive. Instead, these are shipped through freight which has its own risks and usually takes much longer to reach the destination. Then, the seller needs to make sure that the local infrastructure is good enough for the product to reach its destination in the shortest amount of time possible.
The payment method is another challenge that the seller must address before accepting international orders. Different countries have different payment methods that are locally popular among the people but may not be the most convenient to use internationally. Credit cards are easier to use internationally but payment processors like PayPal are not equally popular throughout the world. In addition, the seller must be aware of the currency exchange rate and know that the payment system usually doesnt offer the spot market rate of currency conversion.
Sellers must also be aware of international laws for import and US laws for export. This is because different products are banned in different countries and the seller should not get into trouble for shipping an illegal product. This isnt as trivial because import-export restrictions are common in several countries.
Communication can always be a barrier because internationally, not everyone would communicate in English. Tools like Google Translate can only do so much. If you are working with a buyer who doesnt speak or understand English, the transaction may not be as smooth as you would ideally like it to be.
All these international shipping challenges must be addressed by the seller before tapping into the lucrative international market.
