Kitchen Appliances May Be Key to Energy Cost
Despite appliance efficiency going steadily higher, it seems that consumers are simply using way more appliances then in the past, making the demand for energy rise higher than ever before. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) stated in a recent report that the United States had 76.6 million occupied houses in 1978. However, by 2005, that number had increased by 45 percent to 111 million. What this means is that more houses will cause the operation of more appliances. During that same period, the report shows that the amount of energy used for heating overall actually went down. While it is possible to attribute some of that change to the transfer of many people to warmer climate areas, it can mainly be tied with the increase of efficiency of major appliances -namely major kitchen appliances. Most of them, even the discount kitchen appliances that many customers can buy in their local shops or online, are actually more efficient than their early counterparts. Most homes also have much better insulation than in the 70's, which also leads to great savings. But in the same period between 1978 and 2005, the share of electricity used by these appliances and general consumer electronic consumption has almost doubled from 17 percent to 31. This happened even though these kitchen appliances became more efficient. This was because there was simply more of them. The data from 2009 shows that the efficiency could not overcome the sheer amount of appliances that were bought. What this means is that consumers will now have to think of better and different ways to save energy. With the "green" awareness commonplace, many consumers are trying to figure out how to maintain their technologically advanced lifestyle, without imposing such a large amount of energy on the main network. One of the options being brought to the table is the concept of green energy. Consumers are seeing if "getting off the grid" and making their own renewable energy would help. This remains to be seen. Due to high costs of the new energy sources, not enough consumers are trying it in order for researchers to see the general affect on the market. But there is something to be said about supplying your own energy for your major kitchen appliances. We will still need to wait a few more years in order for the numbers to come in. But it is clear that renewable energy sources will play a major role in shaping the new form of the American dream.
