Linking For Beginners - What You Need to Know

Because the internet is now such a large and crucial part of our lives, it's important that we understand how it works. When most people go online, it's because they have a problem that they need fixing or a question that they need an answer to. This usually results in a visit to one of the major search engines (either Google, Yahoo or Bing), so by knowing what makes these search engines tick we can control how well our websites rank in them (to a certain extent).

So what do search engines look for? They want quality websites (with useful information that their searchers will like) to appear in their rankings and they also want the sites that appear to be relevant to whatever was searched for.

How do they know these two things? There are two main ways. Firstly, the 'spider' your site and look to see what the content is about. Secondly, they look at who is linking to your site and what the anchor text of those links is. In case you don't know, anchor text refers to the blue underlined word(s) that you click.

For example, if you have lots of links pointing to your site with the anchor text of 'dog training' you're far more likely to rank for that keyword (assuming your site is also about dog training). In this way, each link is like a vote. Other websites can therefore vote for your site by linking to you, which tells Google (and the other search engines) that your site is worth of ranking.
