Liposculpture - The New Liposuction

The areas of the body that are typically the hardest to remove fat from

, and that many consider to be 'problem' areas, include the chest, neck, buttock, upper and lower back, arms and abdomen. These areas of the body require different methods of body contouring, simply because they are resistant to exercise and diet. But a new form of lipoplasty, called liposculpture, has proven to be very effective in ridding the body of these fat pockets.

Liposculpture, also called ultrasound or ultrasonic assisted liposuction (UAL) is an innovation on traditional liposuction. First a special saline solution is injected into the area and a small incision is made. A small tube called a cannula, which emits ultrasound energy, is inserted into the incision. The ultrasound energy emulsifies the fat cells and these cells are then suctioned out of the area through the cannula. UAL liposuction is a refined and localized procedure that is an efficient way to remove fat from 'problem areas'.

Traditional liposuction is slowly being replaced in popularity by this minimally invasive procedure. UAL liposuction is, in most cases, an outpatient surgery which requires only a local anesthetic, usually included in the saline injection. The emulsification of the fat cells allows them to be removed with much less trauma to surrounding tissue, and recovery time is reduced substantially. The reduced swelling and minimal bruising has also been a deciding factor in choosing between this procedure and traditional liposuction.

It is important to understand that UAL liposuction will not create the drastic changes associated with liposuction. It is a localized treatment designed to sculpt and reshape small to medium areas on the body. The procedure sharpens features and accentuates areas with a more sleek appearance. Troublesome pockets of fat can be removed quickly and easily with this minimally-invasive procedure.

Liposuction is a very popular surgery. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons reported that one out of every 10 procedures performed by them in 2009 were lipoplasty surgeries. With UAL liposuction becoming so popular, lipoplasty is sure to continue to have record numbers.

As far as the cost of liposculpture, one factor in determining prices is the type of anesthesia a patient chooses, and there are several options in this area. Liposculpture will cost more or less depending on the type of anesthesia chosen, and although having an anesthetist present during the procedure will cost more money, it can be beneficial. The anesthetist will make sure the patient's vital signs are okay, and ensure they do well during and after the procedure. This is important because the anesthetist will keep an eye on the patient while the surgery is taking place, something the surgeon cannot do while he is performing the surgery.
