Liposuction Technology Has Become Safer And Easier

When undergoing liposuction, many people do not fully understand the technology used in the procedure

. But because of advancements that make the procedure safer and more efficient, it is now one of the most popular cosmetic operations.

Currently there are seven main techniques used- tumescent, ultrasonic-assisted, power-assisted, super-wet, SmartLipo, external ultrasound-assisted liposuction (XUAL), and microcannula liposuction.

Where doctors previously used no fluids, super-wet and tumescent liposuctions use saline solutions mixed with lidocaine as a local anesthetic and epinephrine, which restricts blood vessels and prevents bleeding. Using fluid prevents trauma to the surrounding tissue, makes the fat easier to suction out, and causes the treated area to expand, making more room for cannula movements.

Cannula are used to liquefy the fat, making it easier to remove. In the past surgeons merely moved the cannula back and forth to break up fat, but today there are more controlled, gentle methods. For instance, an electrical-powered cannula was developed for this purpose. A better cannula that uses ultrasound vibrations was developed later, making any manual movement needless and reducing blood loss. Microcannula can also be used. These are much narrower, so the incisions are smaller and smaller areas, such as the jaw line, can be treated.

External ultrasound-assisted liposuction, a similar technique, uses ultrasound that is applied through a hand piece held against a special gel on the patient's skin. This prevents the formation of seromas (pockets of fluid that show up as bumps on the patient's skin), which can occur using UAL. However, it is the surgeon's discretion as to how much vibration to apply, so it is somewhat operator-dependent.

Procedures such as SmartLipo, CoolLipo, and ProLipo use lasers to liquefy fat before removing it. Medical procedures of all kinds are increasingly implementing lasers because they are fast, precise, and safe. In SmartLipo, the laser directly dissolves fat and can seal of leaking blood vessels, reducing risk of infection. Other lasers, such as those used in CoolLipo and ProLipo, use different wavelengths to emulsify the fat so it may be removed.

However, despite the advanced technology used now in liposuction, a good surgeon is just as important. Patients should always do their research and find a fully qualified and experienced plastic surgeon that is certified. They should also research what techniques any surgeon uses and the pros and cons of this technique. The newest technique is not always the best, as it may not have been tried extensively or the surgeon may not be as experienced using it. It may help to schedule appointments with various doctors to discuss their experience and opinions of various liposuction techniques.
