A luxury version of "The Good Life" has come to Cambridge with the opening of New Zealand's first ecologically fully sustainable bed and breakfast villa.

The five-star "Earthouse", which was completed several months ago, is completely self-contained and fully furnished with handcrafted furniture, luxurious linens, private patio and the finest amenities including a wood burning fire, solar heated tile floors and more than the comforts of home.

"It is five star luxury accommodation with the smallest possible ecological footprint," says Earthstead Villas inn keepers Alastair and Suzie Osmond.

"We used natural timbers, finishing oils and natural wall coatings," says Suzie.

A total of 12,000 mud bricks were used to construct the Earthouse and these were all hand made on the property using local materials.

Staying at the "Earthouse" is in many ways like experiencing the popular English comedy programme "The Good Life".

"Guests discover the serenity and wonder of Earthstead and be a part of the whole earth movement. At seven acres, the Earthstead property is spotted with fragrant fruit trees, flowering bush, organic vegetable gardens and a quiet stream.

"Guests can walk around to meet the posse of cows that graze on the lush grasses, milk the house cow, view the chooks that peck in the yard and provide delicious organic eggs, see the occasional rabbit that roams the fences and observe our organic gardening principles and other sustainable building projects," she says.

"It is luxury with a conscience. You don't have to forgo all the comforts of this modern life in order to be sensitive to the environment. Our mission is to develop these villas and our lifestyle into the most sustainable, yet liveable and exciting journey possible," she says.

"The adobe brick Earthouse is a guest's dream; hand built using ecological principles, natural materials and implements solar hot water, passive solar gain and is super insulated to be as earth friendly as possible," she says.

"Hospitality has always been a valued part of our family life, so it was a natural progression to share our sustainable dream at Earthstead with others."

"Our attention to detail has extended to individually cut terracotta mosaic tile floors, the designing and commissioning of the beds and linen, and the living earth roof which seamlessly blends with the surrounding native trees."

The Osmonds said the feedback from the first wave of guests at the Earthouse had been overwhelmingly encouraging making the hard work worthwhile and now the construction of a second Villa on the property is underway.
