Martial Arts and Self Defense Working Together to keep you Safe

There is a widespread misconception that once you know martial arts and self defense techniques you are practically invincible

. The truth is that whilst you may be capable of displaying your martial arts ability quite impressively in non treating situations, when you are actually being attacked it is a whole different story. For most people the chaotic nature of an actual attack makes it very difficult to remember what they have been taught. The most important thing in such a situation is to remain calm and focused. If you are able to achieve this, your training will gradually come back to you thus giving you the confidence to overcome your fear and execute what you have been taught.

Self defense deals more with conditioning of the mind than actual fighting techniques. Learning karate for example gives you the ability to defend yourself, but self defense puts you in a mental state that allows you to execute your karate techniques when faced with a life treating situation. The free response approach to self defense while using martial arts means that you have to learn to use your intuition. In martial arts there are pre set combinations for certain situations. When you use the free response approach you develop your own way of handling a dangerous situation. Martial arts is a great way for women in particular to keep themselves safe from attackers. Attackers automatically assume that women are vulnerable so when you show them you are anything but vulnerable, it catches them off guard and gives you the upper hand as the role of victim and attacker seem to reverse.

This however will only work if the female is capable of executing her martial art techniques in such a traumatic situation. Ultimately if possible you should avoid getting in a confrontation with your attacker, the goal is to avoid getting hurt long enough to escape or until help arrives.

That being said if you are face with a situation where it is you or your attacker do not hesitate to use all you have been taught to defend yourself. As stated at the beginning it is important that one remain calm and rational in these situations. Once you are able to subdue your attacker make a swift escape and contact the authorities; do not prolong the encounter in an attempt to vent your anger or display dominance as it only take one bad decision for the roles to revert to attacker and victim.
