Kanha National Park was created in the year 1955 and prior to it was divided in to two different sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar

. This was the first national park in India. The park lies between Mandla and Balahat district with 940 sq. km of area. It is also known Wild Magic Park and the project is run from assistance from World Bank. The park is famous for Royal Bengal Tiger, Leopards, the sloth bear, Barasingha and Indian Wild dog. Also one could witness around 1000 different species of flowering plants.

Tourism has been increasing in this park for the past several years. It is the reason you would find plenty of resorts at Kanha National Park. Other animals found in this park include spotted deer, sambar, barking deer and four-horned deer. It was here where Swamp deer was rescued from extinction. Langurs and wild boars are common animals found in the park. Animals like fox, hyena, jungle cat, civets, porcupine, ratel, hares or honey badger are also found here. The easiest way to access the park is from Jabalpur and the nearest airport is just 175 kms. As you would find many tourist taxis from Jabalpur. There are three gates to access the park, one being inside village Khatia, second gate is in Mukki and third is in Serai. The fact is that unlike cats, Tigers are excellent swimmers. During humid conditions they like to cool themselves in water. The other myth about Tigers is that they pounce on human and are constantly look out for human. The fact that hardly one knows is that they try and avoid human contact whenever they can. It is said that tigers are good tree climbers but to escape a tiger the best you can do is climb up a tree. You cant beat tiger in race and so climb up a tree to have any chances of survivals. Tigers like hunting small preys instead of big one. They fact is that they prefer big one as the energy involved is the same and hunting the bigger one means they have lots to feast on. Now, its time for some information about the park timings and fees. Like every other National Park, Kanha is open for tourist from 1st November to 30th June. The timing is between 11.00 am to 3.00 pm although the timings are subject to change depending upon the decision of the authorities. The entry fee for the park is only Rupee 10 for Indian citizens and Rupee 100 for Foreigners. Entry for Children is free and for student groups is Rupee 10 per group. If you carry a video or still camera, you would be charged extra for the same.
