Ninja Self Defense Mastery - Control The Timing Within The Fight To Take Control And Win!

The art of Ninjutsu the self-defense and personal development system of Japan's ancient shadow warriors, is very unique within the martial arts world

. In fact, I have always taught my students that Ninjutsu is not a real martial art in the conventional sense.

Why would I say such a thing?

Simple really. It's because Ninjutsu uses and takes advantage of things that the average person, let alone martial artist, thinks about, or even knows exists in the grand scheme of things!

This, combined with the fact that most conventional martial arts at least as they are practiced today tend to focus solely on physical self defense, makes the Ninja's art more like a philosophy or science, rather than a fighting system!

However, the focus of this article is on controlling and winning a fight. So, that's where I will concentrate my discussion. Just know that everything that I share with you here is also applicable in both defending against and controlling the outcome of any conflict or relationship good or bad.

That being said, when it comes to dealing with a combat situation, the Ninja defender relies on much more than mere physical technique and trickery. Contrary to the image presented in movies, books, and even in demonstrations by some so-called ninja-masters, the true Ninja uses principles and concepts that are nearly invisible to the eye unless you know precisely what to look for.

One of these principles that is a kihon or fundamental lesson in the Ninja's self-defense art of Ninpo-Taijutsu (the ninja's method of using the body), is that of timing (ritsu-do in Japanese). By controlling the timing of different elements within the encounter, the Ninja controls not only what the opponent can do at any given moment he also determines to what extent the opponent can act, as well as controlling the other person's comfort level.

As a student's skills progress, he or she is introduced to, and expected to develop proficiency in three general types of timing. These three aspects of timing can also be called:

1) Timing Within the context of physical skill and the application of a given waza or technique action, this relates to when the Ninja applies or delivers the technique when the punch hits it's target or when the joint is seized. To a Ninja, there is always a best time for the application of a technique so that maximum effect can be derived from minimal effort.

2) Rhythm This is related to the connection and riding of the opponent's attacks. To be proficient at this type of timing, you will need to take up a grander perspective on the fight as a give-and-take between the attacks and defensive actions employed by you and your attacker. Like a dance or musical score, there is an overall rhythm to the back-and-forth flow of events. Sometimes its slower and more pronounced, while other times chaotic and erratic.

Either way, your ability to play with, and disrupt, this rhythm can make a huge difference in how much you actually have to fight.

3) Flow This is related to the personal use of your own body, and the coordinated movement of the parts to perform any given movement. The goal is to attain to a state where easy, balanced, and graceful movement are the norm. To do this, you will need to explore the relationship between say, the length of the parts of the arm with the timing that each contributes to a punch, for example.

This is the same as the different sized gears within a traditional clock or watch. Each has it's own natural movement and speed so as contribute to the precision of the overall machine. Developing this skill always you to create power from the flow of movement rather from crude muscle strength. It also allows you to be able to easily slip and respond respond to flow with your attacker's actions.

It's difficult enough to fight off an enraged attacker. Mastering the principle of effective time, in all its forms, insures that you are not only able to defend yourself more effectively and efficiently...

It also insures that you won't be fighting yourself in the process!
