Poor Drainage: The Culprit Behind The Smell
With most people not yet through dealing with the effects of the financial meltdown
, buying a new washing machine just because the old one smells terribly bad would not just cut it. There is no need to fret, however, as there are some ways by which you can bring back your washing machines glory without having to spend much.
Poor drainage is one of the most common reasons why your washing machine smells. The water that gets trapped in the ducts can serve as a good place for bacteria, mold and mildew to thrive in. This, then, leads to the musty smell. As simple as it may sound, poor drainage is actually caused by a number of things, one of which is overloading of clothes during a washing cycle. With all the clothes blocking the duct, theres nowhere for the water to pass through.
Another common reason for poor drainage is an infrequently used machine especially if it is a frontloading one. Keep in mind that doors of frontloading machines tend to shut tighter than top loading ones in order to prevent water from leaking out. This means that any moisture that gets left behind is a musty smell waiting to happen.
So what do you do in order to prevent water from getting stuck inside your machine and creating a
stinky washer?
One of the things that you can do is to lessen the number of clothes that you put in your tub. This allows your water to run freely. Aside from this, make sure also that you wipe your washing machine after every use to prevent build up of moisture. The absence of moisture would stop the
musty smell washing machine that are left with standing water have.
Try also to run a cycle of water with about two to three teaspoons of baking soda every week. This would help take away any
washer stinky smell. If your machine already has a strong smell, you can try running a cycle of water with about four teaspoons of white vinegar. You can then use the baking soda to remove the smell of the vinegar.
