Doctor Patricia Bath, an African American doctor invented a method for removing cataract using laser technique
. This method was highly appreciated and became popular in no time, as it was safe as compared to previous method where drill like device was used to remove cataract from the patient's eye. She patented her invention "Cataract Laserphaco Probe" in 1988. With this she also became the first among
women inventors to ever receive a patent for medical invention. She also invented a method by which people that were blind for a long period of time to be able to see again.
Another African American woman to receive a patent was Miriam Benjamin, a teacher in Washington D.C. She received a patent in 1888 for what she called Gong and Signal Chair'. It was primarily used in restaurants that allowed customers to call the waiter from where they were sitting. This system had a button on the chair which when pressed by the customer used to give a signal at the waiters' station and also light up an indicator from where it was signaled. This system was also used in the United States House of Representatives.
Katherine Blodgett was researching on monomolecular coatings when she discovered an amazing method of applying a way of coatings to glass and metal layer by layer. She found that the thin films when layered to attain a certain thickness completely cancelled the reflection from the underneath surface, resulting in a totally transparent or invisible glass. Her invention is widely used in devices such as microscopes, telescopes, camera, and projector lenses and also for limiting distortion in eye glasses. Katherine Blodgett continued her research to discover a gauge for measuring the thickness of glass films. For the same she received many honors including Photographic Society of America Award and Francis P. Garvin Medal by American Chemical Society.
Bessie Blount a physical therapist by profession, while serving injured soldiers of World War discovered how inconvenient it was for them to have food. Their pain caused her to invent a device which could help them have food on their own. She invented device which is electrically controlled to deliver food to the patient only mouthful at a time. She went on to find another device which can be worn around the neck of the patient. She patented her device in 1951. As United States Veteran's Administration didn't support her much she gave up the rights to French Government in 1952.
An American doctor, Virginia Apgar invented Apgar tests which were used to evaluate the health of a new born baby. Virginia Apgar invented the system in 1952 and is being used till date by doctors to assess the health of the baby.
Josephine Cochran, was the first one to invent the dish cleaner. She was basically looking for a faster way to clean the dishes without breaking it. She invented the dish washer back in 1886. She patented her design and also started producing them through a company which later became the home appliance company KitchenAid.
