Preparing To Take A Grand Canyon Helicopter Trip
Many people who visit the South Rim or Vegas enjoy the thrill of taking a Grand Canyon helicopter tour of the natural wonder
. You can just do a fly over, or you can book a landing tour, it is your choice. It is a good idea to research your tour options online. Just figure out where you want to go, then look for a tour within your price range.
Here is some basic information about air tours of the Grand Canyon. For starters, if you book a helicopter that departs from Vegas, you have to go to the West Rim. That flight covers about 125 miles and takes 45 minutes or so. If you would rather visit the South Rim, you will need to book a combo package that includes bus or plane transportation. The bus ride to the National Park will take about 5 hours, but the airplane is much quicker and only takes about 45 minutes.
Your research will tell you that the Hualapai Indian Reservation includes the West Rim, the edge of a 100-mile slash through the Earth's surface. This portion of the park is often called Grand Canyon West and it's where you'll find the fabulous Skywalk. This is the only area where you can soar down into the canyon by helicopter.
You have three main choices if you want a West Rim helicopter landing tour. One option is to ride the helicopter 4000 feet into the depths of the canyon to a picnic spot where you will enjoy a breakfast, dinner, or lunch picnic complete with champagne. This particular package also gives you 30 minutes to explore the Colorado River and the surrounding area. Your helicopter will land about 200 yards from the river.
The second options builds upon the first choice by giving you full access to the glass Skywalk, and taking you on a boat trip down the Colorado River. This is the most comprehensive landing tour available, and it's a great experience for people who want to explore the park as fully as possible. From start to finish, this package lasts about six hours.
A third very popular landing tour includes VIP passes to the Grand Canyon Skywalk. A VIP pass allows you to bypass the waiting line and it gives you unlimited access to the Skywalk. Without a pass, you could wait in line up to 45 minutes. Although it would probably seem even longer than that because of the desert heat. Besides that, you will have another 2 hours to visit the Hualapai Ranch, the Indian Cultural Center, and the lookout areas at Guano Point and Eagle Point.
A Grand Canyon helicopter tour proves the truth of the old saying "getting there is half the journey." During your flight from Vegas to the canyon, you will fly over scenic landmarks such as the Grand Cliffs Wash, Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, and Fortification Hill. You will also fly over the Skywalk at the West Rim and the beautiful Colorado River below. Grand Canyon air tours like this last around two hours.
Seats on these flights are limited, so they sell out quickly. It is recommended that you book your air tour early so you don't lose out on what could be the high point of your vacation. You will need to prepare for your flight anyway, so even if you could find an open flight at the last minute, you wouldn't want to go without the necessary clothing and supplies.
