Preparing for an Interview - Who Am I?

Preparing for an Interview - Who Am I?

Preparing for an Interview - Who Am I?

Every job seeker needs to ask him why he should be hired before he steps out looking for jobs. This is part of knowing who you are. You need to know what value you can add to the work process of an organisation and in which area you can add the value. Don't be like that job seeker who was asked what he could do and said anything'. "Anything" to an employer is vague and means you don't know yourself.

This article is about the first thing you need to do before you can answer the question why you should be hired.

Harold Whitman makes it clear in this statement why you need to know whom you are;

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs; ask yourself what makes you come alive. And then go and do that. Because what the world needs are people who have come alive."

You have to know yourself first before you can know what makes you come alive and it is after that organisations can hire you because they need you. You will be setting yourself up for a showdown if you cannot answer that question before your prospective employer.

Nothing can be achieved by an individual that does not know his strengths and his development areas. Like Socrates said, "the unexamined life is not worth living. To know one self is the primary goal of the thinking person"

Knowing yourself will help your hone your strength and play down on your development areas when you are selling yourself.

Every employer wants to know who you are. Your communication of who you are to them will enable them determine if you can help in meeting their needs through the job role or not. The point where whom you are meets the needs of the employer is your point of being hired.

Knowing who you are means;

-knowing your strength

-knowing your developmental areas

-Knowing your purpose

-knowing your drives and will power

-knowing the underlying principles driving your existence

-knowing your communication style

-knowing the kind of job you can fit into

-knowing your level of tolerance

-knowing your hobbies etc

Really, not so many people can answer this question correctly. The best answer you can give to the question flows from knowing that you are the problem you help humanity solve. And I think that is why Danny Thomas said

"Success has nothing to do with what you gain in life or accomplish for yourself. It's what you do for others."

As part of knowing who you are, you must be able to provide sincere answers to the quizzes below;

What do you like to do?

What skills do you have?

Which skills do you like to use?

What kind of work setting fits best with your personality type?

What is your personality type?

What do you believe in?

While attempting to provide answers to the above quizzes, never forget that you are a mixture of past experiences, present feelings and future hopes.

You are your memories, experiences, failures, achievements, qualifications, growth (past); your physical features, skills, values, interests, abilities, personality, attitudes (present) and your visions, fears, predictions, goals (future).

If you must have a successful career or business, knowing who you are is an exigent ingredient. Circumstances will rule your life if you don't know yourself.
